Aruba shifts tourism strategy toward high-value model

Aruba is shifting its tourism strategy from a focus on volume to a model centered on higher value and sustainability. Following the Aruba Global Travel Conference, officials noted that while the island faces pressures on housing, infrastructure, and public services, these challenges are a byproduct of the successful economic transformation initiated after the 1985 oil refinery closure.

Aruba Tourism Authority (ATA) CEO Ronella Croes highlighted that the nation is among the most tourism-dependent in the world, with the sector expected to represent 78.6 percent of the GDP in 2026. Minister of Tourism, Transport, and Labor Wendrick Cicilia emphasized a new government direction of “more prosperity, less pressure,” aiming to attract the right type of visitors to ensure economic benefits reach the local community while protecting the island's authenticity.
