Aruba MP questions economic growth disconnect with citizens
Aruban Parliamentarian Eduard Pieters of the PPA has questioned the disconnect between the government’s reported economic growth and the daily reality of citizens. While the government highlights record tourism and financial surpluses, Pieters argues that these successes are not being felt by the general population.
Pieters highlighted the stagnation in Oranjestad, noting that local investors are hesitant to commit funds due to uncertainty regarding the Spatial Development Plan (ROPV). He criticized the Ministry of Infrastructure for a lack of comprehensive vision, suggesting that minor paving projects do not constitute a real plan to revitalize the commercial heart of the island.
To address these issues, the PPA proposes accelerating the ROPV update to allow for increased residential density and vertical construction in urban areas. Pieters suggests that smarter development in Oranjestad and San Nicolas could help resolve the housing crisis while preserving natural areas like Burubundo.
