Aruba shifts tourism focus to resident well-being and sustainability

Aruba is shifting its tourism strategy to prioritize resident well-being and environmental sustainability over mere visitor volume. As part of the Aruba Strategic Tourism Master Plan 2026–2031, Minister of Tourism, Transport, and Labor Wendrick Cicilia proposed a “High Value, Low Impact” model. This approach aims to evaluate success based on factors such as local employment, housing availability, water resources, and the preservation of cultural and natural heritage.

Simultaneously, the island is seeing significant growth in specific markets. Tourism Director for Latin America, Jordan Schlipken Croes, reported a 193.5% increase in visitors from Argentina between January and May 2026 compared to the previous year. This surge follows the introduction of direct flights from Buenos Aires via Aerolíneas Argentinas. Aruba remains a top destination for Argentine travelers, who increasingly seek the island for its security, tranquility, and sustainability offerings.
