Aruba's Caya Grandi faces decline amid failed revitalization

Local merchants in Oranjestad's Caya Grandi have warned that the historic city centre is suffering from deteriorating infrastructure, reduced visitor flow and a loss of its cultural appeal. Business owner Mardjori Vermeer cited crumbling buildings, lack of maintenance and an atmosphere that no longer attracts tourists or locals.

The decline follows past redevelopment decisions that introduced non‑native palm trees, unfamiliar paving and a tram system, which critics say clash with Aruban tradition. Repeated attempts by tourism agencies and successive governments to revive the area have not succeeded, leaving merchants to shoulder the economic burden. Stakeholders are now calling for cultural events, targeted infrastructure investment and coordinated cooperation between the government and the business community to restore Caya Grandi as the island’s commercial heart.
