Arunachal Pradesh outlines major infrastructure and hydropower roadmap

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has outlined a comprehensive development roadmap for the state, focusing on infrastructure, education, and renewable energy. During his 80th Independence Day address, Khandu announced the approval of ₹7,834 crore for the 2026-29 period under the Chief Minister Comprehensive Schemes and Mission Shikshit Arunachal. This includes significant allocations for state and rural road connectivity, as well as power infrastructure modernization.

In the education sector, ₹1,500 crore has been approved for Phase-II of Mission Shikshit Arunachal to build upon previous investments in school infrastructure and digital education. The state has also set long-term targets for youth skilling, aiming to train one lakh youth and create 10,000 entrepreneurs by 2036.

Regarding border security and rural development, the Vibrant Village Programme is transforming frontier communities into hubs for tourism and livelihood. Phase-I involves ₹2,800 crore in projects across 455 villages along the India-Tibet border, with Phase-II expanding to 122 villages along the Myanmar and Bhutan borders.

Additionally, the state has declared 2025-2035 as the ‘Decade of Hydropower’. The government aims to commission nearly 19 GW of hydropower capacity, supported by approximately ₹1.9 lakh crore in investments, to contribute to India’s clean energy goals. Major projects such as the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project and the Kamala Hydro Electric Project are central to this energy strategy.
