Arvo Pärt, Anita Raja, and Prodromos Tsinikoris awarded Goethe Medal 2026

The Goethe-Institut has awarded the 2026 Goethe Medal to three international figures recognized for fostering cultural dialogue and building bridges with Germany: Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, Italian literary translator Anita Raja, and Greek theater director Prodromos Tsinikoris.

Arvo Pärt, a renowned minimalist composer, was honored for his artistic contributions and his long-standing connection to Germany, where he lived in West Berlin for nearly three decades after his works were banned in the Soviet Union. Due to health reasons, his son Michael Pärt accepted the award on his behalf.

Anita Raja received the medal for her work in making modern German literature accessible to Italian readers, having translated works by authors such as Franz Kafka and Christa Wolf. Prodromos Tsinikoris was recognized for his documentary theater productions that address social issues, including migration and inequality, serving as a cultural link between Greece and Germany.

The awards were presented in Weimar, celebrating individuals who represent an open Europe through their cross-border cultural engagement.
