Arya Nagar village panchayat moves to oppose love marriages

A social panchayat in Arya Nagar, located in the Hisar district of Haryana, has passed a resolution opposing love marriages within the village. The decision follows several recent marriages where couples married against their families' wishes.

During a meeting attended by approximately 1,000 villagers, discussions included the possibility of a social boycott against couples and their supporting family members. Some residents suggested that those who marry for love should not be permitted to live in the village, citing a desire to “preserve the social fabric” of the community.

While reports indicate a resolution for a boycott was proposed, local BJP leader Hanuman Verma stated the decision reflects a collective resident view rather than a formal diktat, and denied a formal boycott resolution was passed. A committee is expected to be formed to conduct a door-to-door survey to gauge community support for these measures. The elected village panchayat has reportedly distanced itself from the decision.
