AS Monaco Basket barred from French pro leagues over financial insolvency
The French Basketball Federation (FFBB) announced that AS Monaco Basket will be excluded from the Betclic Elite and Elite 2 professional divisions for the 2026‑2027 season. The decision follows the club’s inability to meet financial guarantees, with debts estimated at around €24 million and a failure to submit required recovery documents by the deadline.
Monaco’s champion team, which won the French title in June 2026, had received a €16 million loan from the Principality’s Société Nationale de Financement and was in talks with investor Helen Holdings, led by former NBA player Jamal Mashburn. Neither the state support nor the prospective investment satisfied the FFBB’s financial criteria, and an appeal upheld the original sanction, leaving the club’s future in professional basketball uncertain.
