AS Roma draws 1-1 with Fenerbahçe in Champions League debut

AS Roma secured a 1-1 draw against Fenerbahçe in their Champions League return, marking a significant shift in offensive performance compared to their domestic Serie A form. While the team maintained high possession, their clinical edge dropped sharply in Istanbul, recording only 8 total shots and an expected goals (xG) value of 0.48.

Manager Gian Piero Gasperini noted that despite the difficult environment and Fenerbahçe’s defensive setup, the result serves their objectives. However, analysts have highlighted a concerning decline in attacking efficiency, noting that Roma’s production in the Champions League has been statistically inferior to their high-scoring performances in the Italian league.

Looking ahead, the team faces a demanding schedule including a match against Inter. Gasperini has indicated that squad rotation will likely be necessary to manage player fatigue following the intense European fixture.
