Asaba: The rising Afro-soul voice from Cameroon

Asaba, born Mary Asombang Asaba, is a rising Afro-soul singer from Buea, Cameroon, who is gaining recognition through the Africa Creative Sound – Amplify Her program. The initiative, funded by the Institut français, aims to connect and amplify female voices within the African music industry.

Originally trained as a nurse, Asaba grew up in the Muea neighborhood of Buea. Her musical journey began in religious and school choirs, where she earned the nickname ‘Choir Mistress’ after starting as a soloist at age 12. Her musical style is influenced by a diverse range of artists, including Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Adele, and Cameroonian singer Charlotte Dipanda.

Asaba uses her platform to promote women's empowerment and cultural identity, blending melodic compositions with socially engaged lyrics.
