Asaduddin Owaisi demands extension for Telangana electoral roll revisions
AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi has called for a four-week extension for voters in Telangana to file claims and objections regarding the deletion of names during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. While the Election Commission recently granted a 21-day extension, moving the deadline to October 7, Owaisi argued this period remains insufficient.
Owaisi raised concerns regarding the criteria for notices, alleging that individuals with six or more children have been targeted. He also noted discrepancies where living individuals were marked as deceased in the draft lists. In the Karwan constituency alone, approximately 100,223 people have reportedly received notices.
An analysis of the draft electoral rolls in Hyderabad reveals varying demographics among flagged electors. In the Goshamahal constituency, an estimated 24 in every 100 electors listed for deletion carry Muslim names. This is notably lower than in Hyderabad’s Old City constituencies, such as Charminar, Chandrayangutta, and Bahadurpura, where the share of Muslim names among flagged electors ranges from 63 to 86 per 100.
