India political row erupts over Uniform Civil Code implementation

Political tensions have escalated in India following Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s announcement that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will be implemented in all 21 NDA-ruled states before the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. The proposal aims to establish a common legal framework for civil matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption, replacing religion-based personal laws.

AIMIM President Asaduddin Owaisi has strongly opposed the move, alleging that the BJP and RSS intend to target India’s Muslim population and weaken constitutional protections for religious minorities. Owaisi cited Articles 14, 25, 26, and 29 of the Constitution, arguing that the UCC could impose Hindu-centric laws on non-Hindu communities and undermine religious freedom. He also urged NDA allies to voice their disagreement if they oppose the code’s ideology.

In response, BJP leaders have defended the UCC, stating it will ensure equality and protect the interests of all citizens, including women. Madhya Pradesh Minister Vishwas Sarang questioned why Owaisi opposes a system that provides equal legal provisions for everyone. Additionally, spiritual leader Acharya Pramod Krishnam criticized Owaisi’s stance, suggesting that opposing the UCC is contrary to the principles of equality found in both Islam and Sanatan Dharma.
