Asahi Kasei subsidiary secures carbon footprint verification for acrylonitrile
Tongsuh Petrochemical, a South Korean subsidiary of Asahi Kasei, has obtained ‘Reasonable Assurance’ verification for the Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) of acrylonitrile produced at its Ulsan manufacturing site.
The independent audit was conducted by Socotec Certification Japan, which reviewed the methodology, source data, and reporting procedures for the fiscal 2025 carbon footprint. This level of verification exceeds ‘Limited Assurance,’ providing high confidence in the reported data from raw material procurement through production.
Acrylonitrile is a critical chemical intermediate used in the production of ABS resins, acrylamide, acrylic fibers, and carbon fiber precursors. The verification aims to meet increasing customer demand for reliable environmental data to support decarbonization strategies and supply chain sustainability assessments.
Tongsuh Petrochemical has previously obtained ISCC PLUS certification and has been marketing acrylonitrile based on biomass-derived propylene since 2022. Asahi Kasei intends to continue reducing greenhouse gas emissions through improvements in manufacturing technologies and the expanded use of biomass-based feedstocks.
