Asahi Linux expands support to Apple M3 series Macs

The Asahi Linux development team has announced official support for Macs equipped with Apple M3 series SoCs. This expansion follows the successful porting of Linux to M1 and M2 series hardware.

On M3-equipped MacBook and iMac models, users can access most features previously available on earlier silicon, including the webcam, internal microphone, USB ports (up to 10Gb/s), Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and hardware-accelerated video decoding with AV1 support. However, certain limitations remain, such as lack of full Display Coprocessor (DCP) support, issues with sleep functionality, and unoptimized 3D acceleration performance and power efficiency. The Mac Studio with M3 Ultra is currently unsupported.

At present, support for the M3 series is limited to ‘Expert mode,’ requiring installation via the macOS terminal. The team expects to move beyond this restricted mode by the release of Fedora Linux 45.
