Asahikawa court disruption leads to suspended sentence for man

A 48-year-old man, Tetsushi Murayama, was sentenced to two years of imprisonment with a five-year suspended sentence after disrupting a high-profile murder trial at the Asahikawa District Court.

Murayama breached courtroom security by lying to staff about a medical emergency to gain access to the courtroom. Once inside, he interrupted the sentencing of Riko Uchida, who had received a 27-year prison term for the murder of a high school girl. Murayama shouted criticisms of the sentence, demanding the death penalty.

Investigations revealed that Murayama had planned the disruption, having previously scouted the court and considered attacking the prisoner transport vehicle with a hammer and spray. While the court described his motives as “self-centered and dogmatic,” the judge granted a suspended sentence in consideration of his admission of guilt and psychiatric evaluations.
