Asan Medical Center opens South Korea’s first Fetal Heart Center

Asan Medical Center has opened South Korea’s first independent Fetal Heart Center to provide specialized treatment for fetuses with congenital heart disease. The center, which opened on September 23, aims to offer continuous care ranging from prenatal diagnosis and delivery planning to immediate postnatal treatment and surgery.

Located on the sixth floor of the New Building, the center is situated on the same floor as the delivery rooms, operating rooms, and the neonatal intensive care unit to enhance patient convenience. The facility will utilize expanded clinical sessions and additional high-precision ultrasound equipment. The center will employ a multidisciplinary approach, integrating expertise from obstetrics, neonatology, pediatric cardiology, and pediatric cardiac surgery.

Asan Medical Center has a significant history in fetal care, having treated over 30,000 fetuses since 2004. The hospital has performed 1,575 high-difficulty fetal treatments, including fetal shunt surgeries, endoscopies, and transfusions. Moving forward, the center plans to introduce advanced interventions such as fetal cardiac catheterization to improve success rates for high-risk heart malformations.
