Asante Gold's Financial Crisis Challenges Ghana's Mining Investment Strategy

State-backed miner Asante Gold is facing severe operational and financial difficulties that are straining Ghana's strategy of taking equity stakes in mining companies. The firm announced that Chief Financial Officer David Wiens will leave the company on August 14, amid efforts to raise at least $100 million in new financing by the end of August.

Production fell to 146,571 ounces in fiscal year 2025, down from 189,600 ounces the year before, while all‑in‑sustaining costs rose sharply, reaching C$3,902 per ounce overall and C$6,036 at the Bibiani mine. Liquidity pressures have led Asante to delay supplier payments, spread $55 million of gold‑hedge obligations, and cut equipment leases. The Ghanaian government, through the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF), holds a significant equity stake after backing Asante’s acquisitions of the Bibiani and Chirano mines, but the company's deteriorating performance puts that public investment at risk.

The crisis highlights the challenges of public participation in the mining sector and raises questions about the sustainability of Ghana’s mining‑investment model.
