Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II visits Howard University

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II visited Howard University in Washington, D.C., on August 25, to engage in discussions regarding academic partnerships and the role of traditional leadership in modern global challenges. The visit, which included meetings with university leadership and Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, Victor Smith, is part of the Millennium Excellence Awards Week 2026 initiative aimed at strengthening economic and cultural ties between Africa and North America.

The Asantehene’s U.S. tour is scheduled to conclude on August 30 at Bowie State University with the Akwasidae Kɛse, a traditional ceremony honoring royal ancestors.

Separately, historical footage from June 1999 has resurfaced on social media, showing a meeting between the Asantehene and the late former Ghanaian President Jerry John Rawlings. The video depicts the Asantehene leading a delegation of chiefs to Osu Castle shortly after his enstoolment to thank the government for support during the funeral rites of his predecessor, Otumfuo Opoku Ware II.
