Asawase Pelele fire destroys makeshift homes in Kumasi
A fast-moving fire destroyed numerous makeshift wooden homes in the Asawase Pelele settlement in Kumasi, Ghana, on Thursday, August 27, 2026. The blaze, which broke out in the early morning hours, displaced hundreds of residents, including migrant workers from northern Ghana and young mothers with infants.
The settlement, located within the Asokore Mampong Municipality of the Ashanti Region, is a densely populated informal area primarily inhabited by metal scrap dealers and head porters, known locally as kayayei. The high density and haphazard layout of the dwellings significantly hindered firefighting efforts.
The Ghana National Fire Service received a distress call at 6:03 a. m. and arrived on the scene by 6:17 a. m. Asokore Mampong Municipal Fire Commander DO III Wikana Daniel noted that the congestion made it difficult for personnel to navigate the lanes and reach the burning structures. The fire was eventually brought under control at approximately 7:13 a. m., preventing further spread into the surrounding community. The exact cause of the fire and the total extent of property losses have not yet been disclosed.
