Ascensor da Glória accident: Investigation and compensation updates

Nearly one year after the tragic accident involving the Ascensor da Glória in Lisbon, which resulted in 16 deaths and 24 injuries, questions regarding legal and technical responsibility persist. Investigations have identified several critical failures, including the use of cables not certified for passenger transport, discrepancies in the procurement and application processes, and issues regarding maintenance records and system capacity during a rupture.

Fidelidade, the insurer for Carris, announced that it has covered approximately 2.3 million euros in costs related to the accident. This amount includes funeral services, repatriations, medical treatments, and compensation for lost wages. To date, indemnity agreements have been reached with four of the families of the deceased, while seven other processes remain under negotiation. Some cases are delayed due to the need for documentation from various countries involved, and final compensation for the 24 injured individuals cannot be determined until their clinical conditions stabilize.
