Ascidian-derived plasmalogens show anti-aging potential in mice
Researchers from universities in China and the United States have identified a potential link between certain marine compounds and the mitigation of aging signs. The study, published in Frontiers in Molecular Biosciences, focused on plasmalogens, a type of lipid found in high concentrations within ascidians (sea squirts).
In experiments involving aged mice, the administration of plasmalogen supplements led to improvements in learning and memory, as well as enhanced quality and quantity of neuronal connections. The treatment also appeared to reduce brain inflammation. Additionally, researchers observed physical changes in the mice, including the development of thicker, darker, and shinier hair.
While the results are significant, scientists caution that the study was conducted on mice. There is currently insufficient evidence to confirm that consuming ascidians or plasmalogen supplements will produce similar anti-aging or cognitive benefits in humans.
