Ascoli Piceno art exhibition opens in Freising, Germany
The exhibition “SOS – Save Our Souls. Art, faith and identity between the Sibillini and the Adriatic” has opened at the Diocesan Museum in Freising, Germany. Running until March 31, 2027, the showcase aims to present the cultural and religious identity of the Sibillini territories and the provinces of Ascoli Piceno, Fermo, and Macerata to an international audience.
A central piece of the exhibition is the “Pala di San Vittore” by Cola dell’Amatrice, painted in 1514. The artwork, which depicts the Madonna and Child alongside various saints, serves as a historical testament to the community of Ascoli. Following the 2016 earthquake that damaged the Church of San Vittore, the painting has been held at the Diocesan Museum of Ascoli Piceno.
The exhibition features twenty works spanning from the 13th to the early 17th century, including pieces by artists such as Lorenzo Lotto and the Crivelli brothers. The project, promoted by the Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape for the provinces of Ascoli Piceno, Fermo, and Macerata in collaboration with the Freising Diocesan Museum, also highlights the restoration and recovery efforts undertaken following the seismic events in the region.
