Ascore report identifies top German private health insurers amid declining security metrics

The Hamburg-based analysis firm Ascore has released its 2026 corporate scoring for the German private health insurance (PKV) sector. Out of 32 evaluated companies, four providers received the highest rating of ‘six compasses’: Signal Iduna, R+V, Universa, and Württembergische.

While success parameters and customer numbers showed positive developments in the 2025 fiscal year, Ascore reported a declining trend in financial security metrics. Specifically, valuation reserves for PKV providers dropped from minus 8.6 billion euros in 2024 to minus 15.5 billion euros in 2025, representing an approximately 80 percent deterioration.

Other notable shifts include an increase in silent burdens from 24.5 billion to 29.7 billion euros, and a decrease in the security funds ratio from approximately 2.5 percent to nearly 0 percent. Additionally, the equity ratio and the premium refund reserve ratio both saw declines during this period.
