Asda to outsource 3,500 in-store cleaning roles

Asda has announced plans to outsource approximately 3,500 in-store cleaning roles to two external providers. Bidvest will manage stores in Scotland and the north of England, while NIC Services will handle the southern region. The supermarket stated the move aims to “raise the bar” of cleanliness by utilizing advanced machinery, robotics, and cleaning technology.

Asda noted that no redundancies are currently planned, as all affected staff are expected to be offered TUPE transfers to the new providers. The company intends to complete the transition by October 1.

The GMB union has strongly criticized the decision, labeling the move “detestable.” Union organizer Rachelle Wilkins expressed concerns regarding the potential for outsourcing companies to reduce pay, terms, and conditions. The union also questioned the timing of the announcement, claiming Asda had previously denied that further outsourcing was planned when asked in April.
