ASEAN ministers meet to address transnational drug threats
The 9th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Drug Matters (AMMD) was held virtually on October 15, 2026, chaired by Oscar F. Valenzuela of the Philippines. The meeting focused on addressing drug issues as a national security threat that fuels transnational organized crime and undermines public safety.
Representing Brunei Darussalam, Minister Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Sufian bin Haji Sabtu noted that 42 percent of drug-related arrests in the past year involved individuals under the age of 35. He emphasized the need for earlier and more precise intervention to protect younger generations.
The meeting highlighted successful regional cooperation, citing a 2025 joint operation involving seven enforcement agencies from five countries that seized nearly 110 kilograms of methylamphetamine. Participants also supported extending the implementation period of the ASEAN Work Plan on Securing Communities Against Illicit Drugs 2016–2025 to complete outstanding activities.
