ASEAN Power Grid Advances Regional Clean Energy Integration
Southeast Asian nations are coordinating the ASEAN Power Grid (APG) under the ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation 2026‑2030 to create an integrated regional electricity market. The plan emphasizes high‑voltage submarine cables linking national grids, with flagship projects such as the Lao PDR‑Thailand‑Malaysia‑Singapore Power Integration Project and a subsea line intended to deliver at least 1,000 MW by 2029. Feasibility studies involve utilities including Tenaga Nasional Berhad and PT PLN, and further links are being explored across the Malacca, Sulu and Celebes seas.
The International Energy Agency estimates total APG investment needs of about US$330 billion through 2040, but only roughly US$27 billion (8 %) is earmarked for cross‑border interconnections. The bulk of funding will support domestic grid upgrades, reinforcing transmission and distribution systems so each country can reliably receive and distribute imported renewable power. Strengthening national infrastructure is seen as essential for the success of regional electricity trade as demand in the region grows 3‑4 % annually.
