ASEAN ministers meet in Philippines to tackle transnational crime

ASEAN security ministers convened in Metro Manila, Philippines, from 19 to 21 October 2026, for the 20th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime (AMMTC). Hosted by the Philippines as the 2026 ASEAN chair, the meeting focused on strengthening regional cooperation against cross-border threats including cybercrime, human trafficking, online scams, money laundering, illegal drug trafficking, and arms smuggling.

A key agenda item involved an ASEAN declaration aimed at protecting children from online sexual abuse and exploitation, specifically addressing risks posed by artificial intelligence-generated content.

During the plenary session, the Brunei Darussalam delegation, led by Minister Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Sufian bin Haji Sabtu, reaffirmed the nation's commitment to combating terrorism, violent extremism, and online scams. Brunei also highlighted its recent upgrade to Tier 2 in the United States 2026 Trafficking in Persons Report.
