Asen Medzhiev launches comprehensive audit of Bulgaria's National Health Insurance Fund

Interim manager Dr. Asen Medzhiev, appointed deputy head of the National Health Insurance Fund (NZOK) until 30 Nov 2028, signed orders for the internal audit unit and the NZOK inspectorate to conduct a large‑scale review. The audit will cover the period 1 June 2023 to 30 June 2026, when the agency was led by Stanimir Mihaylov, Prof. Momchil Mavrov and Assoc. Prof. Petko Stefanovski.

The review will examine compliance with internal and external regulations in public procurement, the pharmaceutical‑dietary products directorate, the medical devices directorate, and the processing of applications, approvals and payments for treatment of persons under 18, both in Bulgaria and abroad. The aim is to strengthen transparency, accountability and good governance; final reports with findings and recommendations will be made public.
