ASEP President discusses public sector hiring and PhD recognition

The President of the Supreme Council for Civil Personnel Selection (ASEP), Thanos Papaioannou, has engaged in discussions regarding the modernization of public sector recruitment and the recognition of academic qualifications in Greece.

In a meeting with the Panhellenic Association of Public Sector PhDs (PASYD), officials discussed the value of doctoral degrees in the career advancement of civil servants. The discussions focused on creating a meritocratic system that balances scientific training, professional skills, administrative experience, and effectiveness. PASYD emphasized the need for proportional recognition of scientific specialization to ensure objective evaluation criteria without undermining academic titles.

Additionally, Papaioannou addressed ongoing delays in public sector hiring processes. While the average time to issue final results has been reduced from over 18 months to approximately 12 months, challenges remain in completing recruitment cycles. The President noted that specific sectors, such as healthcare, involve complex processes regarding the permanent appointment of contract workers through specialized scoring systems.
