ASEP to strengthen electricity service oversight in Panama

The Panamanian government has introduced Bill 10-26 to the National Assembly, proposing significant reforms to the regulatory framework of the electricity sector. The initiative aims to strengthen the supervisory and auditing capabilities of the National Authority of Public Services (ASEP).

These reforms are intended to provide ASEP with greater legal tools to sanction distributors and enforce quality standards, protecting consumer rights against supply failures. Zelmar Rodríguez de Massiah, General Administrator of ASEP, stated that the current legislation imposes limitations that prevent the regulator from effectively responding to the evolving needs of the energy sector.
