ASFINAG warns Austrian drivers of fake vignette email scams
The Austrian motorway operator ASFINAG has issued an alert about a wave of fraudulent e‑mails that claim drivers lack a valid vignette for using highways. The messages, often titled “Vinyetiniz Yok” or “Odmah plati zamjensku cestarinu,” demand payment of a retroactive ten‑day vignette for about €12.36 and threaten administrative fines of up to €3,000.
Links in the messages direct recipients to counterfeit websites designed to steal personal details and credit‑card information. ASFINAG stresses that the e‑mails are not from the agency and advises motorists not to click any links, not to provide card data, to verify the sender’s address, and to handle vignette purchases only through official ASFINAG channels. The agency notes that such internet‑based scams have been increasing across Austria and other European countries.
