Ashanti Regional Minister denies Mankranso school demolition
Ashanti Regional Minister Dr Frank Amoakohene has denied claims that a classroom block in Mankranso will be demolished to make way for the government’s 24-Hour Economy Market. The denial follows viral images and videos suggesting that a 12-unit educational facility in the Ahafo Ano South West District was being torn down for the project.
Dr Amoakohene clarified that the building will be re-engineered and incorporated into the market project rather than destroyed. He explained that the site was selected because an alternative location was deemed too swampy for construction. The redesigned structure is intended to maintain its educational function, with specific areas set aside for kindergarten and lower primary pupils to allow market women to keep their children nearby while trading.
Prior to the Minister's clarification, Elvis Osei Mensah Dapaah, the Member of Parliament for Ahafo Ano South West, had called for urgent consultations and an alternative site. The MP expressed concerns that the project could compromise existing educational infrastructure and potentially interfere with healthcare delivery due to its proximity to the District Hospital.
