Asheville residents campaign to save black bear ‘Dolly’ from euthanasia
A campaign is underway in Asheville to prevent the euthanasia of a black bear nicknamed ‘Dolly’. The bear, accompanied by three cubs, has been targeted for sacrifice by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission after entering multiple homes and scavenging for food in the Spooks Branch Road area.
Wildlife officials initially recommended euthanasia because the bear has lost its natural fear of humans, posing a potential risk to the community. While one person was reportedly injured during an encounter, the bear’s behavior has sparked significant public outcry.
A petition led by resident Hannah Furgiuele, which named the bear after Dolly Parton, has gathered over 21,000 signatures. In response to the growing support, wildlife officials stated they are now evaluating non-lethal alternatives if the bear can be captured alive.
