Ashok Dham Temple stampede Lakhisarai Bihar Shravan Monday

A deadly stampede at the Ashok Dham Temple in the Lakhisarai district of Bihar resulted in the deaths of at least seven devotees on Monday, August 17, 2026. The incident occurred during the early morning hours on the third Monday of the holy month of Shravan, a time when large crowds gather for Jalabhishek rituals.

The chaos was reportedly triggered by rumors of an electric current spreading after an electric pole or wire fell near the temple path. This panic led to a sudden rush among the massive congregation, causing many to be crushed under the weight of the crowd. Witnesses noted that the arrival of two trains at the nearby Ashokdham Halt around 6:30 am significantly increased the crowd density. Additionally, a section of the bamboo barricading used for crowd management collapsed under the pressure.

At least 12 to 19 people were reported injured, with several in critical condition. Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary expressed deep grief over the tragedy and announced an ex-gratia compensation of 4 lakh rupees for the dependents of each deceased person. Local authorities, including District Magistrate Shailendra Kumar, have initiated investigations into the sequence of events and the management of the crowd.
