Ashok Gehlot criticizes ethanol blending policy and rising sugar prices

Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has criticized the central government's ethanol blending policy, alleging that the decision was implemented without sufficient preparation. Gehlot claims the policy is causing significant economic and technical issues for the public.

He noted that diverting large quantities of sugarcane toward ethanol production instead of sugar manufacturing has reduced market availability, causing sugar prices to rise by 14 to 17 rupees per kilogram within a 15-day period. Additionally, Gehlot highlighted reports of reduced vehicle mileage and potential engine damage resulting from the ethanol-blended fuel, which increases maintenance costs for consumers.

Gehlot further raised concerns regarding environmental impacts, specifically air and water pollution linked to ethanol production. He called for a comprehensive review of the policy, arguing that while alternative energy is important, it should not compromise food security or place an undue financial burden on citizens.
