Ashoke Sen awarded prestigious Oskar Klein Medal
Indian theoretical physicist Ashoke Sen has become the first Indian to receive the Oskar Klein Medal for 2026. The award, presented annually by Stockholm University and the Nobel Committee for Physics of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, recognizes his pioneering contributions to string theory, black hole entropy, and string field theory.
Sen, who holds the Infosys-Madhava Chair Professorship at the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences in Bengaluru, delivered the Oskar Klein Memorial Lecture at Stockholm University’s AlbaNova Centre. His research, including significant work on S-duality, has been instrumental in shaping modern theoretical physics.
An alumnus of Presidency College and Calcutta University, Sen also completed his PhD at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. His career includes research positions at Fermilab and the Stanford Linear Accelerator Centre, as well as faculty roles at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research and the Harish-Chandra Research Institute.
