Ashraf Dabour released from Lebanese custody under settlement
Lebanese authorities have reached a settlement to end the prosecution of former Palestinian Authority ambassador Ashraf Dabour. Following his detention in August, Dabour has been released on the condition that he immediately leaves Lebanon for Bulgaria, where his son-in-law resides.
The settlement follows months of legal proceedings and political negotiations aimed at avoiding his extradition to the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah. Dabour was originally detained based on an international warrant involving allegations of corruption and financial crimes, specifically related to the sale of real estate owned by the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).
During his detention, Dabour’s health reportedly declined, leading to a hunger strike. The National Human Rights Commission in Lebanon had previously urged the government not to extradite him, citing international obligations regarding the prohibition of torture and non-refoulement. The resolution of the case through departure rather than a formal judicial ruling on extradition has raised questions regarding the intersection of political influence and judicial independence.
