Ashwin backs Kohli and Rohit for India's 2027 ODI World Cup

Former Indian off‑spinner Ravichandran Ashwin said that strong support from team management and a proper rehabilitation programme could keep senior batsmen Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the squad for the 2027 ICC Men's ODI World Cup, scheduled for October‑November 2027 in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. Ashwin noted that both players are dealing with injuries – Kohli is ruled out of the upcoming three‑match series against Afghanistan, while Sharma has cleared his fitness tests – but added that “if the management wants both of them at the 50‑over World Cup … it’s very much possible to keep them on the park and utilise their experience.” He emphasized that “good energy from both sides is very critical” and urged selectors to provide clear backing so the veterans can contribute their experience to the team.

India will play roughly 20 ODIs before the tournament, using the series against Afghanistan as part of their preparation. Ashwin argued that age should not be a barrier if the players remain fit and receive the necessary support, highlighting the value of their experience in overseas conditions.
