Ashwin urges India to back bowler Kuldeep Yadav ahead of 2027 World Cup

Former Indian off‑spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has repeatedly criticised the national team’s selection policy, saying left‑arm wrist‑spinner Kuldeep Yadav was unjustly left out of the first ODI against England at Edgbaston and should be given a frontline role ahead of the 2027 World Cup. He described Kuldeep as a “match‑winner” who needs confidence and consistent opportunities. Ashwin also pointed to other squad options, noting Shivam Dube should remain a backup all‑rounder and praising the emergence of fast‑bowler Gurnoor Brar. In separate comments, Ashwin welcomed the ICC’s new formats for the 2027 ODI World Cup and 2028 T20 World Cup but warned that true growth requires more regular bilateral matches for associate nations such as the Netherlands, Scotland, Nepal, USA and Ireland. He suggested these teams be added as a third side in series to gain experience. Ashwin also lauded Shubman Gill’s batting and captaincy, describing him as an authoritative leader for the 50‑over format.
