Asia air superiority shifts as China expands stealth fighter fleet

The rapid expansion of fifth-generation stealth fighter fleets in Asia is reshaping regional air superiority dynamics. China is significantly increasing production of its Chengdu J-20 stealth fighters, with projections suggesting a fleet of 500 to 1,000 aircraft could be deployed by 2030.

In response to this technological shift, India and Pakistan are navigating different strategic paths to address potential stealth gaps. India, having withdrawn from the Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft (FGFA) joint venture with Russia in 2018 due to concerns over technology transfer and performance, is focusing on its indigenous Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) project. However, the AMCA is not expected to enter active service until the mid-2030s, leaving India to rely on its current fourth and 4.5-generation fleets in the interim.

Similarly, Pakistan faces potential delays in procuring the Chinese Shenyang J-35 stealth fighter. Reports suggest these delays may force the Pakistan Air Force to focus on maximizing its existing capabilities, specifically the Chengdu J-10CE and JF-17 Block III fleets, to maintain a combat edge while awaiting fifth-generation technology.
