Asia Bennett family demands bodycam footage after fatal JSO shooting

The family of 22-year-old Asia Bennett and civil rights attorney Ben Crump are demanding the release of unedited body camera footage following a fatal shooting by a Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office officer on August 11.

Officers responded to a reported domestic violence dispute and were informed Bennett was armed with a knife. Police state that Bennett refused commands to drop the weapon and advanced toward an officer, leading to an initial shot. Authorities further claim a second shot was fired after Bennett attempted to get up while still holding the knife.

However, the family and attorney Ben Crump dispute the official account. Witnesses have challenged the timeline, suggesting the second shot occurred too quickly for Bennett to have risen. Crump stated that Bennett was shot in the back while on her hands and knees, arguing she posed no imminent threat at the time of the second shot.
