Asia Bibi case highlights Pakistan blasphemy law tensions
The case of Asia Bibi, a Catholic farmer from Punjab, Pakistan, highlights the severe consequences of the country’s blasphemy laws. In June 2009, Bibi was accused of blasphemy after a dispute with Muslim women over the use of a communal water well. Following false accusations spread by a local resident, she was sentenced to death by a local court in October 2010.
The case drew significant international attention and sparked domestic unrest, including protests by extremist groups demanding the execution of the sentence. The legal and political tension surrounding the case led to the assassination of Salmaan Taseer, the Governor of Punjab, by his own bodyguard on January 4, 2011, due to Taseer’s vocal support for Bibi and his calls for reform of the blasphemy laws.
