Asia cyclones and monsoon rains cause over 50 deaths and massive displacement
A series of tropical storms and the southwest monsoon, known as Habagat, have caused widespread devastation across Asia, resulting in more than 50 deaths. Fatalities include 23 in Myanmar, 21 in the Philippines, and 7 in India.
In the Philippines, the situation is particularly severe on the island of Luzon. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported that approximately 4.34 million people, or 1.25 million families, have been affected by flooding, landslides, and service interruptions. The monsoon has been intensified by tropical storms Luis and Maymay, as well as Typhoon Dolphin.
China has also faced significant impact from Typhoon Dolphin, which made landfall in Zhejiang province with winds of 151 km/h. This prompted a red alert and the preventive evacuation of over 1.6 million people. Heavy rainfall has caused flooding in provinces including Henan, Shandong, and Anhui.
Meteorologists have warned that a strong El Niño could further exacerbate weather conditions in the region in the coming months.
