Asia drummer Carl Palmer explains why Roy Wood was not hired

Drummer Carl Palmer has shared details regarding the formation of the progressive rock supergroup Asia in 1981, specifically why the band chose not to hire Roy Wood as their lead vocalist.

Palmer suggested Wood, known for his work with Wizzard, The Move, and Electric Light Orchestra, due to his songwriting pedigree and shared Birmingham roots. Despite Wood’s talent and a meeting with the group, the band members—including Steve Howe, Geoff Downes, and bassist John Wetton—felt that he was not the right fit for the group’s direction. Following the decision, Wetton proposed himself for the role of lead vocalist.
