A severe heatwave across East Asia has shattered temperature records and caused significant agricultural and human casualties. In South Korea, the city of Yangsan recorded 42.5C on August 2, the highest temperature since 1904. The extreme heat has been linked to at least 31 deaths and the loss of over 900,000 farm animals and 1.4 million farmed fish.

Farmers in South Korea report devastating losses, with potato crops rotting in the ground and watermelons, strawberries, and other produce being destroyed. President Lee Jae Myung has called for urgent reforms, warning that such extreme weather is becoming the “new normal.”

In Japan, temperatures exceeded 40C, prompting officials to introduce the “kokushobi” (cruelly hot day) designation. The Japan Weather Attribution Centre noted that the intensity of the heat would be “virtually impossible” without global warming. Meanwhile, Hong Kong reached a record 36.9C, the highest since 1884. Other regions, including Xinjiang in China and Pyongyang in North Korea, have also experienced extreme heat and tropical nights.
