Asia oil imports challenge claims of Middle East export surge

Data regarding Asian crude oil imports for August suggests that Middle Eastern oil flows have not yet returned to pre-conflict levels, challenging recent claims by U.S. officials.

According to data compiled by commodity analysts Kpler, Asia is expected to import approximately 23.12 million barrels per day (bpd) in August, a slight decrease from 23.36 million bpd in July. These figures remain roughly 4 million bpd lower than the average seen in the three months prior to the outbreak of the Iran conflict.

U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright previously stated that Middle East oil exports had rebounded to 15 million bpd, with some days even exceeding pre-war averages. However, ship-tracking data and import trends do not currently support these assertions. While there is a natural lag between loading and arrival, current Asian import volumes do not reflect the surge described by the U.S. administration. Analysts note that clearer evidence of increased flows through the Strait of Hormuz would likely appear in September or October import data.
