Asia-US Container Freight Rates Hit $8,000 per FEU Amid Peak Season Surge

Container freight rates on the trans‑Pacific lane have risen sharply, with Asia‑U.S. East Coast prices reaching $7,998 per forty‑foot equivalent unit (FEU) and West Coast rates climbing to $6,175 per FEU, an 8% increase from the previous week. Freight data shows a 120% rise in West Coast rates since mid‑May and a 70% jump on Asia‑North Europe routes. The surge is driven by early peak‑season demand, front‑loading by shippers ahead of tariff deadlines, and higher bunker fuel costs linked to Middle‑East tensions.

Analysts expect the market may have peaked: Bill Mongelluzzo (Journal of Commerce) notes carriers’ recent rate hikes could be the last to sustain 2026 highs, while Patrick Fay, CEO of BOC International, said, “No one predicted this surge.” Capacity is set to increase, with a 7.5% rise in July and a further 6.5% planned for August on eastbound trans‑Pacific routes, and West Coast capacity expected to grow 12% month‑over‑month. Oil price pressure has eased, with Brent at $73.75 per barrel, down from earlier $120 peaks. Some observers forecast that spot rates may start to soften as the additional capacity and waning demand balance the market.
