Asian algae invasion causes ecological damage in Spain

The invasive Asian algae species Rugulopteryx okamurae is causing significant ecological and economic damage along the Spanish coastline. The species has spread across thousands of kilometers, destroying marine biodiversity and causing substantial financial losses in the local fishing and tourism sectors.

Experts, including researcher María Altamirano from the University of Málaga, suggest that complete eradication of the algae is likely impossible due to its high adaptability and the resources required. The invasion, which began near the Strait of Gibraltar around 2016, is attributed to human activities such as maritime traffic and recreational boating. In areas like Granada, the algae has decimated native Posidonia oceanica meadows. Current scientific consensus suggests that management should focus on prevention, ecosystem protection, and public education rather than eradication.
