Asian central banks adopt divergent interest rate paths
Central banks across Asia are moving in divergent directions regarding interest rate policies. The Bank of Thailand has unanimously decided to hold its key policy rate steady at 1.00%. This decision follows a slow and uneven economic recovery characterized by weak private consumption and declining loan approvals for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
In contrast, the Bank of Korea is expected to implement a 25 basis point hike to 3.00%, driven by inflation remaining above the 2% target and GDP growth exceeding forecasts. Meanwhile, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas is forecast to deliver a third consecutive 25 basis point increase to 5.00% in an effort to stabilize the Philippine Peso, which has faced pressure from rising crude oil prices and record exchange rates.
