Asian Development Bank approves $305.75 million for Nepal highway upgrades

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved $305.75 million in financial assistance to upgrade several major highways in Nepal, including the East-West Highway, Prithvi Highway, and Karnali Highway. The package consists of a $285 million loan, a $20 million grant for regional cooperation, and $750,000 in technical assistance.

Funding will be allocated toward expanding the Narayanghat-Hetaunda road section by $245 million and the Mugling-Ambukhaireni section by $30 million. Additionally, $10 million is designated for improving the Karnali highway. ADB's country director for Nepal, Arnaud Cauchois, stated the project aims to revitalize transport routes, support tourism, and improve wildlife movement through resilient infrastructure.

Separately, the Prithvi Highway faced temporary closures for emergency repairs in the Galaundi area of Dhading. The closure was necessary to address road damage caused by Trishuli River erosion. The maintenance work occurred during the Dashain festival, causing logistical challenges for transport operators and travelers.
